50% Tariff on India, Possible Tariffs on Furniture, Potential Relief on Some Indonesian Products – 21

Tariffs on Products From India Top 50%

At 0:01am ET yesterday, August 27th, the additional 25% ad valorem duty rate on most goods from India took effect – a tariff applied based on India’s purchasing of Russian energy products.  When added to the reciprocal tariffs, most goods from India are now subject to duties of 50%.  All other applicable duties, including antidumping and countervailing duties, taxes, fees, exactions, and charges, will continue to apply to these imports too.

Some items are exempt:

  • Reciprocal Annex II exemptions – available here: Annex-II.pdf – and those confirmed in Clarification of Exceptions Under Executive Order 14257 of April, 2, 2025, as amended
  • Donations by persons subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, such as food, clothing, and medicine, intended to be used to relieve human suffering
  • Informational materials, including but not limited to, publications, films, posters, phonograph records, photographs, microfilms, microfiche, tapes, compact disks, CD ROMs, artworks, and news wire feeds
  • Articles subject to Section 232 – Articles of iron or steel, derivative articles of iron or steel, articles of aluminum, derivative articles of aluminum, passenger vehicles (sedans, sport utility vehicles, crossover utility vehicles, minivans, and cargo vans) and light trucks and parts of passenger vehicles (sedans, sport utility vehicles, crossover utility vehicles, minivans, and cargo vans) and light trucks, and semi-finished copper and intensive copper derivative products
  • Smartphones
  • Articles the products of India that (1) were loaded onto a vessel at the port of loading and in transit on the final mode of transit prior to entry into the US, before 12:01 a.m. ET on August 27th, 2025; and (2) are entered for consumption or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption before 12:01 a.m. ET on September 17th.

The US and India are involved in trade talks and have conducted 5 rounds so far.  The latest round, set for this week, was postponed.

Potential Tariffs on Furniture Imports

Communicated, but not yet officially implemented, was the Trump Administration’s plan to impose tariffs on furniture imports at some point.  There is currently an investigation into wood products, looking to determine how wood imports are affecting US businesses.  The outcome of this could be used to justify implementing tariffs placed on furniture imports.  A final decision is expect within the next two months.

Possible Relief on Indonesian Palm Oil, Cocoa, and Rubber

Some positive news: trade negotiations with Indonesia could see relief for tariffs on certain products.  The current 19% duty rate could be removed from palm oil, cocoa, and rubber from Indonesia should a deal be struck between the country and the US.  If that gets solidified, we will bring you the news.
